Project #4

Here's a place where you can ask questions about the fourth project. Ask anything you like. Click on the "Comment" button. Smart students ask all kinds of questions; others make all kinds of assumptions that are often wrong! It's better to ask.

Hopefully you'll get an answer quickly. By the way, I'd rather you ask your questions here rather than in e-mail (unless it's really personal). What's a question for you is likely a question for others as well.

Also, be sure to return to read my answer (or answers by the AIs).

  1. I am going through figuring out a couple different personality traits that I could give one of the two objects. Would charming or helpful be considered personality traits? Thank you :)

    1. Yes. You may think of these traits in a loose way.

  2. I have two questions:

    1. We're designing two opposite personalities. Does this mean that we have to design two separate devices, or can we design one device that switches personalities based on user interaction or preference?

    2. What does our company stand for? Does InteractiveFuture, Inc. aim simply to provide the next big thing that centers around users, or does IFI have a big push towards profits? I.e. do they want to somehow incorporate marketing/brand loyalty through these personalities?

    1. These are great questions!

      1) You only choose ONE device, but that device will operate in two different ways, reflecting the two different personalities. You don't need to make it use both personalities depending on the context. Rather simply design the device for each of the personalities--not worrying how these personalities will be turned on or off. So if you chose the refrigerator and the personalities, collaborative and self-centered, show how the frig will operate collaboratively, and then show how it will operate in a self-centered manner.

      2) IFI is a consulting company. It creates visions and brand identification for its customers. A similar, but larger firm is Leo Burnett: http://www.leoburnett.com/
The goal is to invent/design innovation in products; the goal is to lead to more profits for the sponsoring company. So, for example, Whirlpool may have gone to IFI for some innovation support.

    2. Thanks, Marty! I was really confused about whether or not we were designing two devices or two personalities of devices

  3. My partner and I just finished up our project, but we noticed that there is no submission set up for the assignment.

    1. There is now. And I hope you reviewed your work in light of Monday's discussion in class.
